What is reactive programming?

Reactive programming is an approach to software development that focuses on building systems that react to changes and events. It’s based on asynchronous data streams – sequences of related events that are generated and processed at different times.

In reactive programming, data streams are the spine of application – everything’s conveyed as a data stream: events, calls, messages, and even failures. It allows the system to efficiently handle large volumes of data and process events in parallel (or asynchronously), improving overall performance and scalability.

Reactive programming differs from traditional, event-driven programming in the following ways:

  • Data-oriented vs. control-oriented – reactive programming focuses on the flow and transformation of data, while traditional programming is more concerned with controlling the execution flow of the program.
  • Asynchronous vs. synchronous – in traditional programming, events are processed one at a time, blocking until completion. Reactive programming operates asynchronously, allowing for non-blocking and concurrent processing of events.
  • Observer and handler functions – reactive programming consists of “observer” and “handler” functions. A given stream generally starts with an observer – a segment of code or a device like an IoT sensor that recognizes important conditions or changes and generates messages to signal they’ve happened. “Handlers”, on the other hand, perform the action based on that message.
  • Resilience and scalability – reactive programming needs to be resilient and highly scalable because it manages variable loads.

The 4 principles of reactive programming

Reactive programming aims to produce reactive systems, as they’re called in the Reactive Manifesto. Reactive systems are scalable, more tolerant of failure, and flexible, so they adjust to changes quickly. Users can interact with reactive systems quickly and effectively, enhancing customer satisfaction.

Reactive programming rests on 4 principles:

  • Responsive – The system reacts and responds in a timely manner to incoming events or user interactions. This means rapid and consistent response times and consistent quality of service delivery.
  • Resilient – reactive systems handle failures and errors gracefully. They’ll stay responsive even when faced with failure, allowing the system to recover and continue functioning properly.
  • Elastic – reactive programming automatically scales the system’s resources up or down based on the workload, ensuring the system stays responsive under varying workloads.
  • Message Driven – communication in reactive systems is message-driven, meaning that components communicate through asynchronous messages and are minimally dependent on each other. This allows them to operate independently and reduces the impact of changes in one component on others.
